Program Note

Fanfare and Chorale is a short work for brass nonet written while I was a student at Interlochen Center for the Arts in the summer of 2016. In this piece, I hoped to highlight the wide variety of texture brass ensembles offer, from brilliant brightness in the fanfare sections to a richness and depth in slower lyrical writing. The work opens with an insistent rhythmic figure passed between two pairs of trumpets, which is later echoed by the ensemble as a whole. The middle of the piece develops into a warm chorale texture as melodic lines are passed from instrument to instrument; the piece concludes with a restatement of the opening rhythmic figure overlayed with melodies from the chorale.
