Program Note

I wrote for three corners from April to May of 2020. This piece – in its concept, construction, and execution – is deeply affected and influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic. It is about distance and the struggle to come together when separated. It is about the revisions we make – to our lives, our art, our selves – when faced with adversity. It is hopefully a work that can bring emotional comfort in a dark time.

Written for the fresh inc. festival, which is this year taking place in an online format, for three corners is a work for piano and two mid-ranged instruments that are spatially distant. The piece is performable live over Zoom and is written to account for latency in video and audio transmission. Alternatively, it could be performed in person by separating the performers by a large physical distance.

This commission was made possible by the Steven R. Gerber Trust.
