Program Note

In September of 2020, I jumped at the chance to write a solo work for Supriya Weiss when we were paired to collaborate on a piece for the Yale Undergraduate Chamber Orchestra's New Music for Virtual Ensembles winter concert. I wanted to create a piece for Supriya that would be personally meaningful to her in some way: Supriya asked if I would write a piece in memory of her close friend, Jenna Rae Regalado, who tragically passed in 2019. For Supriya, flowers and butterflies are symbolic of Jenna Rae, hence the title - 'petalwing'. While I never had the chance to meet Jenna, the way Supriya spoke about her and how she brought light into her life was incredibly moving. Additionally channeling my own emotions and experiences of loss, 'petalwing' is a piece about grief, acceptance, and overcoming.
